Major/Essential Functions

Position Description

  • The position reports to the Department Chair of Surgery on all academic matters and to the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Transmountain campus, on clinical matters.
  • Serves as the Chief of Service at the Hospitals of Providence Transmountain campus upon confirmation of appointment by hospital
  • Implement the strategic plan for Division of Surgery in which each of the Department's missions of education, patient care, scholarship and service are enhanced
  • Participate in the recruitment and retention of faculty for the Division of Surgery, Transmountain campus of TTUHSC El Paso and provide oversight of division faculty to ensure performance metrics are met
  • Facilitate mentoring and promotion-orientation faculty development opportunities in collaboration with Department Chair
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the educational and clinical goals and objectives of the Department and provide teaching opportunities within the Surgery Division for medical students rotating at the Transmountain Campus of TTUHSC El Paso
  • Ensure the Division achieves high levels in financial performance, support of education, high quality clinical services, scholarship and collaboration with colleagues and partner institutions
  • Maintain compliance with Joint Commission, Federal and State accreditation requirements within the Division of Surgery at Transmountain an support the schools requirements in these areas
  • Collaborate with colleagues at the Department of Surgery, TTUHSC El Pasoand Division of Surgical Specialties, Transmountain Campus of TTUHSC El Paso in establishing a regional reputation for clinical excellence and sustain a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, resident education and scholarship for the Department of Surgery
  • Develop professional relationships within the department, across the health sciences center, and within our partner hospital and community
  • Manage and balance competing agendas and priorities while maintaining focus on the institutional goals and objectives
  • Develop a culture within the Division of Surgery that emphasizes collaboration and mutual trust and respect with a shared vision for the future that drives priorities and a sense of mutual responsibility and accountability for the performance within the division
  • Adheres to institutional and departmental policies and procedures
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA and billing regulations and requirements
  • Demonstrates professionalism in accordance with PLFSOM Declaration of Faculty Professional Responsibility

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a practice setting that includes an academic/private sector collaboration
  • Leadership experience at the level of Vice-Chair, Division Chief, Medical Director, Program Director, or other comparable experiences
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
  • Experienced in recruiting, retaining, mentoring and developing highly qualified faculty, staff and residents
  • A track record of effectively serving diverse patient populations
  • Master's degree in business administration, healthcare administration, public Administration, medical Management, or equivalent degree
  • While not required to develop external research funding themselves, the successful candidate must be familiar with the organization and conduct of clinical research and scholarship and be able to maintain a culture which supports scholarship in an academic institution
  • Experience working in a culturally diverse environment with sensitivity toward cultural differences

Required Qualifications
Academic degree as defined by the academic unit and as appropriate for the position held. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • M.D. / D.O.
  • Unrestricted Texas Medical License or eligibility for an unrestricted licensure within twelve months in the State of Texas
  • Board certification in a Surgical specialty (other than Obstetrics and Gynecology) by an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) recognized board
  • Qualify for faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor
  • Must meet the practitioner recruitment requirements as set forth in the Anti-Kickback Statue and Stark Law
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and program development skills for development of new services
  • A basic understanding of budgeting revenue management and productivity considerations and a willingness to work closely with the TTUHSC El Paso administration to manage these areas within the department
  • Experience as a practicing pediatrician in an academic medical center and willingness to maintain a high level of activity and visibility in a clinical setting
  • Evidence of emerging leadership qualities with the ability to secure the confidence and cooperation of others, and strong appreciation and understanding of the critical importance and synergy between patient care, education, and scholarly activity, as well as the interdependent relationships inherent in a health science center
